Trip to Yorkshire Sculpture Park
Yesterday we visited Yorkshire Sculpture park for a day out. What an absolutely beautiful place the park is huge with very well tended greenland all around. The architecture of some of the buildings was so grand both the new and the old. This made me really want to use some architecture as inspiration for my symbol. These are a series of images I took while visiting. One space I really liked was at the end of a exhibition, with bean bags, free tea, tables with books that inspired the exhibition and a video explaining the concept behind the exhibition. From this trip I learn that not all inspiration has to come from gallery's or museum's it can come from anything in everyday life. Overall a great trip and very helpful.

Type - Production & Distribution (Lecture 3)
Notes:
Type is something that underpins everything we do as designs
why type is important:
a quote i liked from the lecture was ' type is what language looks like'
is the craft of endowing human language with durable visual form
3200 bc is when type began
Our alphabet came from the greeks and it began with picture symbols
pictures - diagrams - symbols
we as humans have moved from oral to written, a reason for this was to write things down document things both in trade and in science. we went from Pictures to diagrams to symbols ending up with letterforms to create words.
Johannes Gutenbergs - printing press (1436)
William Foster (1870)
only the rich could read william foster in 1870 made education compulsory, Elementary education act. This made reading a significant part in culture, walter gropius depicted the difference between font and function, which appeared in the bauhaus (1919 - 1933) Designing started with bauhaus and the use of mass production.
Max miedinger - Created helvetica, it is the birth of modern type, 25 years on microsoft ripped off helvetica and created arial
Apple introduced creating fonts digitally this was on the macintosh in 1990
Type is about audience we need to think about aspects behind the type such as audience and how its communicated to them. '

Study Task 4 - Summarising and paraphrasing
Origins of post modernism
Rick Poyner writes about the origins of postmodernism he discuses when term 'postmodernism' in relation to design first came into use, in 1968 within the British magazine design. He goes on to say that it was believed post modernism 'style' had come to an end by the 1980s and new styles had taken its place, however he says 'The cultural factors that gave rise to postmodernism did not disappear in the 1990s and it could be argued that many of them have intensified’ Suggesting that the idea of not conforming to rules and regulations is largely apparent now more than ever which has influences on graphic design.
Hughes Stanton complained that post modernism lacks originality and that is has not created its own contemporary style, however he thinks it is a step in the right direction for design and lead designer to creating more adventurous and ethically pleasing pieces of work. Hughes stanton Quotes 'as an attitude, it is closer to people and what they want: it is prepared to meet all their legitimate needs without moralising about what those needs should be. Its roots are thus deeper embedded in society than those of the modern school.' Joyner says postmodern style is ‘hybrid, double-coded, based on fundamental dualities’ suggesting this can relate to both old and new or recreating the old to be the new. This worked well with Post modern architecture as it did not target individual classes instead it could appeal to a wide range of peoples tastes as the hybrid, double coded forms would attempt to communicate to both the professional class who could depict the references and the general public who enjoyed the playful elements of the design. The first major monument in of post modern architecture was the portal building built in 1982. Wolfgang Weinkart was a crusial part in the development of the postmodernism. He says ‘It seemed as if everything that made me curious was forbidden'

Study Task 3 - Reading and Understanding a Text
Tone of Voice: For post modernism
5 Key Points:
- Portal building (1982) was postmodern architectures first major monument
- modernism had never been the dominant force in british graphic design
- There is no reason to believe post modern came to a sudden halt in 1990
- Wolfgang Weingart was a seminal figure in the development of the 'new wave' which became Postmodernism
- British new wave was identified with youth culture and pop music as designers tended to position themselves outside professional mainstreams
5 Key Quotes:
- 'Post modern style is hybrid, double coded based on fundamental dualities'
- 'The 1970s was marked by the rise of the corporate style in communications design and the subsequent enfeeblement of imaginative activity'
- 'I dont consider graphic design to be an opportunity to advance art forms. it has to advance the clients interest'
-'The whole memphis idea is oriented toward a senosry concentration based on instability on provisional representation of provisional states and of events and signs that fade, blur, fog up and are consumed'

Study Task 2 - Finding research sources
"What is the role of print media in the digital age?"
This is my chosen questions as the brief specify to chose a topic which we would be most interested in, I think this is the question which I would find most interesting. I also know a book which I could use as a source 'print isn't dead'.

COP1 Lecture: Visual Literacy
I enjoyed this lecture as it gave me a basic understanding of visual communication and how I was already very capable of depicting symbols to understand the meanings, e.g. toilet symbols. These are just images of sticks with dots over there heads they look nothing like humans however we link these to toilets still naturals as these symbols are drilled into us as we grow up. initial i have never even thought about the thought process that goes behind these when i look at these and other symbols. This lecture has allowed me to grasp this much better.
Here are my notes from the lecture.
Study Task 01 - Image analysis Page
Context of Practice Task 1
Image Analysis Exercise
The Uncle Sam Range an advertising image by Schumacher and Ettlinger
The Uncle Sam Range (1879) Adversting Image by Schmacher & Ettlinger New York |
Empire Marketing Board 1927-1933 poster
Empire Marketing Board - East African Transport Old Style and East African Transport No Style by Adrain Allinson from the Colonial Progress Brings Home Prosperity Series |
The Uncle Sam Range (1879) is an american advert for a cooker created by Schumacher and Ettlinger. I believe it was marketed towards middle classed americans who thrive off patriotism and the ideologies of "The American Dream". Uncle Sam is Positioned in the centre of the poster to show his power and importance compared to the world and other charcters, this is strange for an advert for a cooker not to have the product as the main focus point. This suggests that in more depth the poster is much more than just a advert, maybe a Celebration of how far they have come within 100 years of independence promoting there ideologies of Cultural supremacy which they would be using as a selling point and to have a bit of a laugh at the rest of the world while doing so. one way they do this is through the script listing styereo-typical foods for each country this mocks and degrades other countries cultures furthermore promoting Americans Supremacy. We can make links to 100 years of indolence through the clock on the wall which has the dates 1776 and 1876 on. The colour scheme used is very patriotic consisting mainly of blue, red and white which may be making reference to the american flag. The typography used is a block serif which has connotation to american and begins tapping into the western history. Lastly is the racist and sexist connotations attached to the poster, we can see this as the servant working for uncle sam is both female and black this shows us where both stood in society within this time period and compares to the images below as similar connotations are made.
The Empire Marketing Board Poster created from 1927-1933 gives us a good understanding of what was going on at this period of time within the slave trade. It seems to be targeting a audience of wealthy people interesting in investing within it. The image is essentially propaganda leading people to believe that new technologies are leading east africa to a better place this compares to Uncle sam as technology is also used to promote a better life. Also similar to The Uncle Sam range the superior white male is centre of the poster standing stronger and taller than the rest, this gender steortypes and surgests the east african women were not as strong as males. The types on these two images however are different Uncle Sams is bold and over the top this links in with the image of American supremacy and over the top patriotism where as Empire Marketing Board is more subtle and focuses more on the image. The poster also has sexist connotations as we can see from the women leading in old style yet not in new style instead we see a white male standing strong, this suggests that in the old world women could not lead this is why they was unhappy however now a man is in charge and he will lead them to a new better world. all of this because of the time period would of been perceived and believed by a selection of people. This relates to Uncle sam because they also have a female serving suggesting inequality between the two genders. this tell us something about the point in history and how there was still lots of sexism, stereotypes and racism meaning things had not changed much at all since 1879.
